English Title: Great Dictionary of the Yiddish Language.
Editors: Yudel Mark (1897-1975) and Judah A. Joffe (1873-1966).
Published in New York: Vol. 1, 1961 (544 Pages); Vol. 2, 1966 (651 Pages); Vol. 3, 1971 (639 Pages); Vol. 4, 1980 (659 Pages). All Hardcover.
Although the four volumes of the Groyser Verterbukh cover only the letter Alef ('A'), they actually cover, in effect, about a third of the Yiddish lexicon, on account of the great many words in Yiddish that have prefixes beginning with alef, such as avek- and aroys-. The "Groyser Verterbukh" was an ambitious project spanning multiple institutions, researchers, continents, countries, and generations. Unfortunately, the project to complete this great work remains unfinished, though many lovers of Yiddish still hold out hope.
These are among the last new, unsold, never-used copies of these historic Yiddish reference books. A must-own for Yiddish libraries and for serious students of Yiddish.
